THEY’RE HUMAN TOO: Fighting for Dignity in the Prison System

It’s Time to Change the Narrative—Join Us!
📅 March 19, 2025
📍 Mountain America Stadium, ASU
Let’s be real—when we talk about justice, we can’t ignore the walls that were built to keep our people locked away, stripped of their dignity, their culture, and their basic human rights. That’s why They’re Human Too exists. We’re here to shake things up, push back against the neglect, and remind the world that our incarcerated brothers and sisters deserve care, respect, and support.
This movement wouldn’t be possible without my partner in this fight, Monica Davis, a dedicated traveling nurse who has worked inside the prison system and witnessed firsthand the neglect, discrimination, and inhumane conditions our incarcerated loved ones endure. Her experience, her voice, and her unwavering commitment to this mission are why we refuse to stay silent.
And guess what? We’re bringing this movement to ASU’s Change the World Exhibit! This isn’t just another event—it’s a powerful moment of truth, accountability, and action.
Why This Matters
Black and Brown individuals are incarcerated at alarming rates—often over-policed, over-sentenced, and thrown into a system that was never meant to rehabilitate them. But inside those walls, the injustices continue. They’re denied skincare for melanated skin, bonnets, durags, religious materials, and other essentials that affirm their identity and humanity. That ends now.
Monica saw it up close—inmates with textured hair had no bonnets, no durags, no proper products. Their hair broke off against prison sheets, their skin cracked from lack of moisture, and their religious practices were disregarded. They were left to navigate a system that dehumanized them at every turn. We refuse to stand by and do nothing.

The Hard Truth (And Why You Should Care)
- 1 in 3 Black men will be incarcerated in their lifetime compared to 1 in 17 white men (The Sentencing Project).
- Many prisons deny access to religious and hygiene essentials specifically for Black and Brown individuals (ACLU Report).
- The 13th Amendment loophole allows modern-day slavery through forced prison labor (Prison Policy Initiative).
- The Mandela Rules (UN Guidelines) demand fair treatment, but U.S. prisons still violate these rights daily.
